Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Hi, friends! Maybe you saw my last post that my friend Krystle and I combined blogs recently for our Booknatic blogging finally. I will continue to post the reviews here as well because I really love chatting with you guys and still hoping to slowly bring awareness for you guys to join us there. That blog will host Giveaways/Author Promoting, Reviews and fun chat/threads. http://thebooknatics.blogspot.com/

Recently, I finished the first two  books of The Vampire Academy, and here’s my ecstatic review for it!

I am so incredibly late starting this series, and believe me when I say I regret it!
It was just that I am such a huge fan of vampire novels, and it seemed like everyone started jumping on the YA Vampire Bandwagon after Twilight, and the mythical race was slowly being ruined for me after every book I gave a chance to. Well, I am catching up fast now! There is a lot of high school-ish drama in this book but it does not over-shadow the fantastic power of this story!

This is probably one of my most favorite vampire worlds to this day. So totally different, so creative and original. This is a Y-A book that reads like an adult book at times, told in the first perspective of Rose Hathaway, a strong-willed, unruly, sarcastic yet very intelligent and badass heroine! (can you tell I love this character?)
Richelle’s vampires are divided upon the Royal Vampires, Moroi-Mortal vampires who are amongst families who are in line for the crown by rankings.   Then we have, Dhampir’s. Half human, half Moroi vampires who are raised to be guardians of the Moroi, assigned to their subject in their younger years at the Academy. They are to learn to protect their assigned Moroi from the Strigoi’s…The bad, immortal  vampires who were once Moroi, but betrayed their bloodlines for power and immortality and seek to destroy  the Moroi’s.
Rose is best friend and assigned to Lisa, a royal Moroi who has powers not many other vampires contain. A few years before the story takes place, Rose and Lisa were in a car wreck that killed Lisa’s family and Rose severely injured… Lisa’s mysterious power when she cried for her friend, resurrected Rose and a bond was formed. Rose can now feel and enter Lisa’s mind/emotions. When Rose suspects someone is after Lisa shortly after, she made the rash decision of taking Lisa and running away.  They lived amongst humans at a college campus for two years before being caught by the enigmatic, powerful and quiet, (and hot) Russian Guardian trainer, Dimitri.
When they are brought back to the Vampire Academy, life changes drastically for both Lisa and Rose. Something is not right in the air, and it seems everyone is after them, especially Lisa. But why? Rose is assigned to afterschool training sessions with Dimitri to catch up on her missed years of guardian training, leaving Lisa alone after hours, trouble finding her every time they turn their heads.
The tension between Rose and Dimitri is electric!
The series of events and conclusion left my jaw hanging wide open. Unexpected turns and reveals left and right before we are taken to the next book in the series.
I found this first book entirely captivating hanging on to every word to guess what’s going on, who is after Lisa and Rose, and keeping my fingers crossed for Rose to get to Dimitri’s heart wholly when she becomes legal, that is!! X_X
I also love how there is romance that keeps you on your toes, but unlike most YA series of the likes, this story does NOT revolve around it!

Richelle Mead has me spellbound, I now must own every book of hers in my collection, and read them over and over! Thank you, THANK YOU for making such a strong and willed successful heroine!  Rose is amazing through and through!

The Host- by Stephanie Meyer–Review for the book AND movie

So, this is going to be my attempt at hiding the overwhelming details of my excitement of what I thought about the book movie adaptation, The Host. I am also going to do a slight book review to add to this, even though I read it years ago. I went to see this movie shortly after release but am just now having the time to actually sit down and really write my thoughts on it, calmly too might I add!…

AHH!!!!!! –#%(*)UTJHyy- Okay. Done with the last of my happy-bursts. ((Sorry this review is long))

I took my mom out to see this movie, and I have to say, it was beyond outstanding! As I’ve said before, generally upon book-to-movie adaptations being released, I try my best to not set myself up for disappointment and walk into the show with low expectations, because I am just nerdy enough to get heartbroken over a lousy attempt at my favorite books being brought to life. The awesome thing about going in with low hopes is that feeling when that guard you spent so much time putting up prepping yourself for disappointment is shattered by the mind-blowing actuality of a splendid well put together outcome.

I was so crazy about this book I read it more than once, and pretty much remembered line for line, and my favorite quotes, it was exhilarating to experience a successful adaptation such as this, my favorite scenes and quotes saved from the producing-butcher!

9780316068048_custom-s6-c10For those of you who haven’t read the book, it’s set in a Dystopian age where an alien race has taken over Planet Earth and invades the human species. They are generally a kind, gentle species and create a new world without money, government, and wars. Though the actual act of invasion seems barbaric, the alien race really only acted with great intentions, not realizing what they are doing is actually wrong and forceful. Their sole purpose was to bond with a foreign species to bring harmony to a world of need. Humans in their eyes needed help, for we are the lesser, barbaric, and hateful race. Stephanie Meyer really hits it on the spot how messed up our society is with this novel.

The souls are inserted into the human brain, and are then used to sift through the human’s memories to gather any information on the last of the non-assimilated humans. Though, in some cases such as one of our Heroine’s, Melanie, are stronger than our extraterrestrial invader expects and the human mind revolts and battles its trespasser to regain control over their body once again, though such incidents are rare.
In this case, here we meet Wanderer. Gentle soul who later earns the nick name, Wanda, and has lived for millennia and has bonded with many hosts from many planets. Wanda is assigned to our strong protagonists, Melanie and when she feels the power and strength of Melanie’s love as she sifts through her memories, she slowly begins to conform to the human emotion, overwhelmed with the power of love and understands enough to feel driven to help Melanie be reunited with her little brother and the man she loves. Wanda stops cooperating with the lead Seeker, and Melanie and Wanda embark on the electrifying journey, but a dangerous one at that, as The Seeker begins the hunt to destroy both Wanda and Melanie both.

Again, you won’t be getting any spoilers from me, but if you can enjoy a good Sci-Fi, though this could be classified as Young Adult, I feel this could be enjoyed by all ages. A little bit of romance, thriller, mystery, and a whole lot of Sci-Fi will be experienced!

This movie, I can’t stress enough, for those who have read the book but not yet watched the movie, please do yourself a favor, and see this one! It’s rare I enthusiastically propose readers to experience a book adaptation for themselves, it was that perfect! The scenes from the book which made me cry, laugh and leave me on the edge of my seat, effectively had me doing so as the movie went on, right on que.

Lover Awakened- #3 Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward

Yup. It’s official. This is my favorite BDB installment, and most definitely my favorite Brother, no doubt about it. I am on book 6 at the moment, fifth is great too! But, we will get to that some other time!

This book focuses on Zsadist, known as the most feared Warrior of the Brotherhood. We have been introduced to him fleetingly among the previous books, but here we learn more about his excruciating, heartbreaking, dark past. He’s illiterate, addicted to pain, vicious in the manner he treats people, even his own Brothers, he refuses to have sex, but only if the girl has her hands on the wall and doesn’t touch him, but one thing that captured me the most, he’s also an artist.(Even if it was just a subtle scene! I am a sucker for a tall, handsome talented fictional man, what can I say! Oh, and whom also sings like an angel)

I have always been intrigued by this character. His frightening personality is highly contrasted by the emotion that shocked everyone at the wedding ceremony in the first book, by just how much soul he put into the old traditional song of their long lost language. That’s when I knew, this man was going to break my heart.

With the previous affection attempts by a curious female vampire, Bella-friend of the Brotherhood and sister to a symphath, who runs the club the Brotherhood hangs out at- made towards Z, he began to crack a little and helplessly begins to wonder what it would be like to be with a female that strangely enough cares about him. The fear of his past refused to let him experiment, so he kept pushing her away, but she’d keep pushing right back.

But, the third book- and if you haven’t begun this series yet, then I will be careful as not to make any major spoilers- But Bella was put into danger when the ever creepy Mr. O, the lesser with some major personal issues that not even the Omega can cure *rolls eyes* , gets his nasty paste-white hands on her and kidnaps her and keeps her as pet. This dude cages her up, feeds her, calls her wife, but reminds him of his sister who was killed.O_0 Mr. O has made his way up to the top of my most-disliked villains of all time, by the way.  But anyhow, Z realized too late just how much he cares for her, and spends all his time locating her for a rescue mission.

Zsadist unleashes the hero buried deep within him, frantically searching for Bella, not believing she could be as dead the Brothers and civilian vampires claim her to be. He truly feels in his heart it isn’t so. For a female to be so interested in him, is brave all in itself, she most likely is just as brave when it comes enough to protecting her will to live.

Events transpire to the finding of Bella, and the romance and heart break begins. He wants to unfold and be the man Bella knows is inside of him, but every time his body reacts to her subtle seductions, he punishes himself; locks himself up and Bella could even swear she heard the sounds of sobbing. This poor, damaged man..pire… It’s obvious he covers his weakness with rebelling and rage because as a Warrior, he can’t afford to let his dark and abusive past get in the way of his duties, but when it comes to affection and adoration, he recoils, afraid to do the wrong thing, and afraid of consequences. But, under all that animalistic rage tendency, he’s soft, protective, and to me, is just a big ol’ teddy bear.

We are presented with a sequence of flashbacks between Phury Z’s twin, and Z himself, of the rescue mission he set out to find his long lost brother. (Z was taken from home as an infant to use as a slave for a rich glymera female vampire, and used for his large warrior… uh… *cough* “dagger” and blood.) Another problems arise Phury battles the vow of celibacy he has taken his whole life when his feelings for Bella ensues. After all the years of protecting Z and standing by his side when no one else would, he struggles to overcome his feelings for her, battling the happiness he feels for his brothers own.

The story as a whole though, I’ll admit how frustrating the story lines *can* be in this series. While I understand that some of the side stories tied into each book, gives a perspective of another brother and leads up to the next book, and gives us a full insight the daily lives of the Brothers interactions with each other, and at times that’s just fine, but it gets super frustrating when it gets dragged on endlessly, distracting the reader from the stuff that’s really going on. Some of the extra insights were very vital for the next book, we have John who showed up to the brotherhood, a young vampire nearing his transition, but no one can solve his background though they believe he is the son of Darius, the vampire who died in the first book, the Queens father, and then Tohr and Wellsies drama. I always had my suspicions of what were to come of Wellsie and her “situation”, but this kinda took me for a loop. (no spoilers) And the endless creepiness that is the Omega and lesser alike.

All I cared about was Z and Bella, and their creepy lesser Stalker, Mr.O.  I also may also be the first one to admit, while most J.R. Ward BDB sex scenes are super cheesy, this one, however, did not fail to impress me. But, in total of this series, we undergo a series of guessing what’s going to happen next, mystery, thrills, romance, heart break, laughter, I honestly shed a few tears for this poor vampire. His story was written so well, I was totally consumed by it and wanted nothing more than to reach out and hug him! Oh, and back off, because he is my Bookboyfriend! *nods*

If you find yourself beginning this series soon, just be prepared for a lot of information. These are long novels and though each book is based on one Warrior from the Brotherhood, you will be introduced to many characters, and forced to focus on many other point of views, including moments in the head of the lesser that overtakes the Forelesser position (lead lesser)who are on the hunt  for warriors, for their own motives.

***Terms you need to know of the BDB series mentioned in this review***
– Glymera-Social core of the aristocracy
– Lesser– De-souled human who hunts vampires and works for the Omega
– Omega– Malevolent, mystical figure  who seeks to extinct the vampire race out of hatred for The Scribe Virgin
– Scribe Virgin– Mystical force who is counselor to the king and keeper of vampire archives

Interesting Facts:
** Vampires are in fact, the good race in this series, and the Brotherhood protects their race and the humans. In fact, some of them even pray.
** There is a lot…a lot of hardcore sex in these books. Some more disturbing and or cheesy than others.

Bound by Blood – P.A. Lupton

bound by bloodPhew, where do I begin? Let me start off by saying, I give this a full 5 star rating. This book had literally everything I love in a book. A thrilling mystery with suspense, vampires, other paranormal characteristics, witty dialogue, and hot, hot, HOT romance.

The story is narrated in first person by a super awesome chick named Brianna Reece. She’s definitely up there with my favorite fearless heroines.

I was immediately hooked as we are thrown into a scene with Brianna undercover at a club, gathering intel on a missing girl case which she feels is strongly connected to another murder case they have been working on, every victim has been drained of their blood.
Brianna has a supernatural ability she was never really able to explain, but other than being a empath. She can detect other people’s emotions, making her a fantastic lie-detector. Right away, I knew we were in for a fun mystery. Little did I know, just how many surprises we would encounter.
I refuse to spoil one major thing about one of her suspects, Nathan, who has his own private security company and also working on the case.

As the story goes on with the murder case, she feels an emotional pull to one of her lead suspects, Nathan. Who just  so happens to know why the cases are oddly connected to her and knows more about her family tree than she does. Nathan informs her that she is connected with a long line of powerful witches and has a strong tie to Nathans family, which explains the pull she felt toward him. He trains her to use her abilities to better protect herself, as they find out the killer is indeed on a trail of her bloodline. And she may be the next target.

The whole time I was asking myself, “Do I realllllly want them to be together, because I am not sure I can trust him!” But the plot thickens and curves are thrown and I was mind-blown. I really want to read the following books! P.A. Lupton has completely captivated me, and I want to thank her for writing such a bewitching tale with everything I have always wanted in a book! Keep up the amazing work and I really hope to read more in this series!

The Mortal Instruments, City of Bones – Cassandra Clare

2261214Alright, I am going to be honest. While this is one of my favorite genres to read, I found myself having difficulty to keep focused on the story and put the book down more than a few times. There were many times where the chapters dragged on a little more than it should have, so my mind would go off in la-la land and I’d wonder what I need at the grocery store…

I do adore the characters, I really do. But what I find disturbing is that, SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER——-yeah ok, the crush between Clary and Jace was adorable, until you find out they are actually brother and sister! What makes that worse? Is that even after all that drama, she was still fighting feelings for him! Whhhhhhy oh whhhhyyy? Seriously, I hope we later find out they are in fact, NOT related. Why get us attached to a relationship and then kill the mojo like that?
“I AM…Your brother…”

Yeah, I haven’t read the second book yet, I will, once the vile settles in my stomach.   That is my only complaint about this book. The story line itself is great. But, there is much potential for an epic adventure. I cannot wait to finish reading the series and pray that there will not be another awkward encounter.

To put it simply, Clary finds out that her mother has been keeping a very big secret her whole life to keep Clary safe. After a series of events, from meeting Shadowhunters (Nephilim’s. Human-angel hybrids, who hunt and kill to protect the humans from demons that flood in from other dimensions) at a club only she could see, to her mom disappearing that very same night, she is taken in by the Shadowhunter’s in a hidden Church in Manhattan and is introduced to a whole new world, a world that her and her mother may have come from, and later discovers who she really is, a Shadowhunter. ( I don’t want to make too many spoilers, so I will leave it that)

At first, though, it was a struggle for Clary to be able to accept that the imaginary world of demons, vampires and fairy’s she always thought to be silly was actually so very real and … she actually plays a very big role in it all when she finds out what exactly her mother was being held captive for. The Mortal Cup. A cup that can breed Shadowhunter’s by drinking the blood of an Angel or a powerful Shadowhunter, but can also turn Shadowhunter’s evil by drinking from it. Someone out there wants to build an army of rebellious Shadowhunter’s. Without making any spoilers, Clary and her new friends set off to race in the search for the cup and to rescue her mother from the man searching for the Cup. The end of this book is a whole new type of end-of-story-twist. Craziness after craziness is discovered at the end. I finished the book with whiplash and a wild case of reading-hangover. I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA Paranormal. The characters do have a lot of depth to them, and Clary honestly does have a great style of writing. I just hope the pace picks up a lil more in the series.

Dreamfever #4 Fever Book- Karen Marie Moning

Ah, yes. Will I ever be able to read another book from another author ever again?

Ah, yes. Will I ever be able to read another book from another author ever again?

It’s for sure. I am in love with this series! The character development in this series is seamless. The transition we experience with Mac, is beautiful.

We witness Mac as a careless, boy-crazy, materialistic girl, and then suddenly thrown into a world she had no idea existed, beyond paranormal existences after going to Ireland to find answers about her sisters death.  After meeting an enigmatic man named Jericho Barrons, she learns more about who she is and what exactly her sister was looking for, and then is off to hunt a dark and evil book to help restore the walls between our world and the Fae’s coming down. She learns she is the most powerful Sidhe-Seer, and it is up to her to sense the where-abouts of this book and get to it before the evil Lord Master.
It was tough for her to accept her new world at first, everything she never believed in, was actually so very real. Everything pink and girly about Mac, melted away, and a new, dark Mac has emerged. She witnessed death, stolen beauty, learned what vengeance feels like, saw the most evil occurrences that proved to her, that she needs to be a fighter, the world is in trouble, and she plays the biggest part and must do what she must to save the human life. She finds her self in so much trouble on this adventure, so many thrills, and now a cliff hanger! This is the best I can do without spoiling anything! I wish everybody would read this series!
